The Naked Souls Reverb From The Depths
Long sought-after and unavailable for 30 years, the music of The Naked Souls has returned to satiate the shoegaze-starved.
An integral part of the famed Czech shoegaze scene in the early 1990s, The Naked Souls were formed by Jiří Novák and Milan Šíp. With songs driven by the soaring guitar parts by Novák and the tender voice of Šíp, The Naked Souls found a home on Lost Records, which was created for the distinct purpose of releasing their music. The band traveled to Switzerland to record their debut EP, Two and One, that includes their most well-known song, "Sleep"; the video of which became part of the rotation on MTV. The Naked Souls gained some notoriety playing shows in London, Czech Republic, and Switzerland, opening for the likes of Stereolab and Adorable, and even making an appearance on MTV's 120 Minutes. An LP, entitled Shady Ways Anticlockwise, was released in 1995 on Lost Records. Although it was received well, with many favorable reviews, the band struggled to continue on after the departure of drummer Láďa Bakša. In 2023, The Guardian published an article highlighting the Czech shoegaze scene of the early 90s, prominently featuring The Naked Souls. Since then, there has been newfound interest in The Naked Souls' music, which has been unavailable for many years.
