Dub and House Music. Two aesthetics born in the shadows, shaped far from the mainstream music industry. Two underground cultures where independence is often a necessity and ingenuity is essential. Two scenes rooted in the margins of society, with dance, sound systems and minorities at their heart.
From the Jamaican sound system sessions of the late sixties, through the nights at Chicago's Warehouse, to the murmurings of the New York house scene in the early eighties — history shows that house, reggae and dub share far more than many people may assume. Collective action, resistance as a driving force, music moving straight from studio to turntable, shared messages: these are the threads that bind these landmark musical movements together. It is at this crossroads, driven by the spirit of experimentation that defines them, that the members of Stand High Patrol found yet another territory worth mapping.
"Skanking & Jacking", the new Musketeerz album, reveals a side of the Dubadub sound never heard on record before. Built for the dancers and for DJs, the LP brings together the pulse of house music and the vibrant groove of reggae. Uncharted territory, never interfaced like this before. The result of a meticulous blending of styles, house, reggae and dub intertwine across 12 extended tracks. The sound is carefully crafted. Built on immersive loops and interlaced with micro-variations that give it an organic texture. Born from the interaction between being and machine. This is not about simply bringing worlds closer together; it's about mobilising influences to chart a new sonic galaxy.
Beyond it's aesthetic statement, "Skanking & Jacking" also stands out for its international cast. The most extensive Stand High Patrol have ever assembled on an album. From England, Italy, Switzerland and Jamaica, the guest vocalists, producers and MCs deepen the sense of dialogue between cultures and styles. At the mic, Joe Yorke, Marina P, Nazamba and Jah Thomas join the Dubadub Musketeerz on their explorations. Each appearance subtly reshaping the contours of the project.
Never fixed, always in motion, "Skanking & Jacking" pays tribute to the traditions that shaped it and closes, as a final nod, with remixes from Jeanville, Androo and the legendary Mad Professor. Dub et House Music. Deux esthétiques nées dans l'ombre, façonnées loin des industries dominantes. Deux cultures underground où l'indépendance est souvent nécessité, où l'ingéniosité est la règle. Deux scènes issues des marges, qui mettent la danse, les systèmes de sonorisation et les minorités au centre.
Des sessions soundsystem jamaïcaines de la fin des années soixante, en passant par les nuits du Warehouse de Chicago, aux prémices de la scène house new-yorkaise du début des années quatre-vingt, l'histoire montre que la house, le reggae et le dub partagent bien plus qu'on ne l'imagine. Les collectifs, la résistance comme moteur, la musique qui passe directement du studio aux platines et les messages partagés sont autant de traits communs qui relient ces courants musicaux historiques. C'est là, au croisement de ces lignes, mû par cette soif d'expérimentation qui les définit, que les membres de Stand High Patrol ont trouvé un énième terrain à cartographier.
« Skanking & Jacking », nouvel album des Musketeerz, présente une facette du Dubadub encore jamais entendue sur disque. Pensé pour la danse, pour les DJ, le LP allie de façon inédite les pulsations de la house music aux vibrations et au groove du reggae. Résultat d'une attention minutieuse portée au rapprochement des styles dans les compositions et les mixs ; house, reggae et dub se confondent au fil de 12 tracks longue durée. Le son est travaillé en profondeur, bâti sur des loops immersives. Transpercé de micro-variations, il acquiert une texture quasi organique née des interactions homme / machines. Ici on ne se contente pas de rapprocher des mondes, on mobilise les influences pour dessiner un nouvel espace sonore.
Au-delà du geste esthétique, « Skanking & Jacking » se distingue aussi par son casting international, le plus fourni jamais réuni par Stand High Patrol sur un format album. Issus d'Angleterre, d'Italie, de Suisse ou de Jamaïque : les chanteurs, chanteuses, producteurs et MC invités viennent renforcer la dimension de dialogue entre les cultures et entre les styles. Au micro Joe Yorke, Marina P, Nazamba et Jah Thomas accompagnent les Dubadub Musketeerz dans leurs explorations redéfinissant les contours du projet au fur et à mesure de leurs apparitions.
