Ottawa outfit Pine is a heartbeat - the ultimate longing clawing at your chest. Off the heels of their first EP Pillow Talk, the four-piece avowed to no longer find themselves lost in the lush, melancholy of heartbreak. Instead, they're embracing the impermanence with wistful nostalgia, bright harmonies, and twinkling guitars. With Will Yip (Tigers Jaw, mewithoutyou, Circa Survive) heading the mixing duties, Cory Bergeron and Anton Delost playing engineer and Jay Mass lending his mastering skills, the band's self-titled, full-length debut is as polished as it is delicate. Pine managed to discover a sound that wasn't nearly as sad or as slow as releases past but still rooted in the aching vulnerability that has driven them from city to city over the last five years. "Despite this record taking almost two years of the universe throwing us curve balls at every possible corner, we have never felt more ourselves than we do now," noted the band. "Fresh out of the dirt, we created something we truly love and that we are extremely proud of. This album is filled with our anxieties, discouragement and personal losses... This album has a heartbeat and it's in all of us." Pine are a band born from change. Despite the series of curveballs, the group has managed to find solace in instability. They discovered a way to embrace the constant onslaught of change and come out swinging - or, at the very least, bathing in catharsis. Though the band jokes "doom and gloom never sounded so sweet," their self-titled debut allows us to feel the lushness of loss, if just for a moment. Maybe the gloom isn't gloom at all. Pine is out via No Sleep Records on September 13th.
