Cologne-based vocal trio LUAH releases ist third album. Lightness meets longing!
After "Sunlit" and "Movimento", which won the German Jazz Award 2023, the Cologne-based vocal trio LUAH led by Elsa Johanna Mohr is now releasing its third album. On "Equilibrio", the three musicians embark on a loving search for balance, carefully balancing a wide variety of styles and moods. This balance draws on a rich diversity and interweaves elements of pop, jazz, singer-songwriter and Brazilian music.
What is new is that Mohr involved the musicians Lena-Larissa Senge and Ula Martyn-Ellis in the songwriting for "Equilibrio". Their trio partners were not only able to contribute their own pieces to the album, but were also closely involved in the entire creation process. This is clearly evident in the music: not only do the voices blend together effortlessly on "Equilibrio", but so do the different timbres, instrumentation variations and atmospheres. There is a rich eclecticism that combines the unusual and always provides musical surprises. "Voices" surprises with its snotty, rocky guitar sounds alongside light-footed vocals, which are joined by baritone and acoustic guitar. Unusually for LUAH, it even becomes explicitly political here: "Voices", inspired by the situation of oppressed artists, is an appeal to the role and power of art. "Because art originates in people, it is a source that can never run dry," says Mohr. The result is a flourishing album - meaningful, familiar, playful and dreamy. Daring and warm, LUAH sings in English and Portuguese about relationships with nature and people as multifaceted as a wildflower meadow.
