Irmin Schmidt 5 Klavierstucke

With the heartbreaking passing of Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay in 2017 – and Michael Karoli in 2001 – Irmin Schmidt is now the last living founding member of CAN, one of the most celebrated avant-garde bands in music history. On November 16, Schmidt will release his new album, 5 Klavierstücke (translated: “5 Piano Pieces”). The album was recorded in Irmin’s home in Southern France using two pianos – one of which was prepared to alter the piano’s typical tone and timbre. Throughout his new LP, Schmidt employs contemplative piano motifs and pairs them with improvisational percussive elements and ambient noise. The result is a subdued yet engaging atmosphere.
