The Dare is a four-piece all-girl band formed in November 2017 on Lombok Island, Indonesia. The members are Riri (vocals & guitar), Yollan (guitar), Meiga (bass), and Desita (drums). They released their debut EP 'Inthrovvvert' in 2018 and kicked off their live performances on April 21 of the same year at 'Record Store Day Lombok 2018. 'The band name 'The Dare' is derived from the Sasak word Dedare, meaning 'girl. ' Their name embodies the spirit of redefining girlhood as something brave and bold. Influenced heavily by the riot grrrl movement of the '90s, their music expresses resistance against gender discrimination, prejudice, and stereotypes-while also celebrating the joy of being a woman. Their sound is deeply inspired by indie pop bands from the K Records and Sarah Records scenes, as well as artists featured on the legendary C86 compilation-especially Heavenly and Tiger Trap. Growing up watching Japanese anime, the members also cite influences from theme songs like JUDY AND MARY's 'Sobakasu' (Rurouni Kenshin) and Hysteric Blue's 'Grow Up' (Ghost Stories), as well as Japanese punk and pop-punk bands like Shonen Knife and PiGGiES. In Indonesia's indie scene, The Dare commands a devoted following. Their limited-edition vinyl releases sell out instantly, and their packed live shows testify to their status as one of the most important indie pop bands in the region. Their latest EP, '369 Days' (2025), is a powerful work that touches on themes of life and death, love for those dearest, loss, and hope. The EP opens with the beachy instrumental 'White Sand' (A1), followed by pure sing-along guitar pop tracks like 'Sunburn' (A2) and 'Slanky Fools' (A3). Side B continues with the sparkling melancholy of 'Yes Sir!' (B1), the Dolly Mixture-inspired 'BLA BLA BLAH' (B2), the catchy, surf-tinged indie rock of 'Hello Mama' (B3), and more. With a total of eight tracks, this landmark release blends indie pop and twee pop with touches of riot grrrl, pop punk, surf, and tropical vibes-ready to take this Lombok-born girl group to the world stage.
