Catafalque are a drone doom metal band with strong influences of noise and industrial, resulting in an extreme, experimental and uncompromising sound. Formed in 2019, Catafalque began as a studio project of disparate bodies nestled in different parts of the UK, trading recordings online. This served as the basis for their self-titled 2019 debut record; the first release on UK label Trepanation Recordings, which quickly sold out on CD and cassette. The project quickly amassed enough material to release a split EP, Memento Mori with US dark ambient outfit Clawing. After receiving positive reviews in the underground metal press, as well as word of mouth fandom, the demand for Catafalque to meet up and become a functioning live band was met in early 2020, adding live drums to their sound. Catafalque soon embarked on their very first headlining UK tour as a trio just before the pandemic took hold of the world. This coincided with the recording and release of their mammoth double album We Will Always Suffer. In 2022, Catafalque entered No Studio in Manchester, UK with producer Joe Clayton (Pijn, Leeched) to record their third mainline studio album Dybbuk, released on vinyl and CD formats by Code666. Catafalque desired to work intuitively and collaboratively, booking only two days in the studio. Going in, the band had little prepared, allowing them to develop sounds, textures and layers on the spot and against the clock, capturing a ferocious urgency and intensity. Inspired by a malicious spirit from ancient folklore, Dybbuk is an album that is overwhelming and crushing, embodying a deeply layered swamp of percussion, atmospheric noise, and loud, bassy frequencies. Dybbuk is an extreme and abrasive album that marries the exhaustive and overwhelming qualities of old school doom metal with the harsh textures and frequencies found in noise and industrial. Dybbuk will appeal greatly to fans of established acts such as Khanate, The Body, Thou, Merzbow, Godflesh and Prurient.
