Joe Jackson Hope and Fury

  • SIN/ITALY 15
Hope and Fury is the new studio album by Grammy-winning artist Joe Jackson, written and recorded between Berlin and New York City. The album features nine new songs performed with Jackson’s longtime band – Graham Maby (bass), Teddy Kumpel (guitar), Doug Yowell (drums) – and Peruvian percussionist Paulo Stagnaro. Produced by Joe Jackson with Patrick Dillett, Hope and Fury marks a return to what Jackson calls his “own mainstream”: sophisticated pop songs drawing from rock, jazz, funk, and Latin influences – or, in his words, “Bicoastal LatinJazzFunkRock.” Opening track “Welcome to Burning-By-Sea” describes a fictional seaside town inspired Jackson’s hometown Portsmouth – a sharp portrait that becomes a microcosm of an entire country. “End of the Pier” contrasts British life in 1922 with its post-pandemic reflection a century later, while “I’m Not Sorry,” “Fabulous People,” and “Do Do Do” showcase Jackson’s trademark humour, from biting sarcasm to playful mockery. Other highlights include the bittersweet “Made God Laugh” and the tender closing ballad “See You In September.” Musically, Hope and Fury recalls the spirit of 1982’s Night and Day, 1991’s Laughter and Lust, and 2019’s Fool. Like those albums, it overflows with great tunes, clever lyrics, and groove – with Jackson’s vocals and keyboard playing as strong as ever. Welcome to Burning-By-Sea I'm Not Sorry Made God Laugh Do Do Do Fabulous People After All This Time The Face End of the Pier See You in September

Lime Garden Maybe Not Tonight

  • Communion Group Limited
  • Alternative, Indie, Indie rock, Pop
Brighton four-piece Lime Garden release their self-reckoning second album, Maybe Not Tonight, via So Young Records. It includes the punch-drunk lead single, ‘23’. Fizzing with the anticipation of stepping into a club at the very start of a night out, ‘23’ sets the tone for the record in full. Bouncy basslines and looping synths pull the listener straight onto the dancefloor, conjuring the bright, ecstatic glow of possibility. Yet beneath its euphoric rush lies a distinctly mid-20s anxiety: the realisation that adulthood has arrived, whether you feel ready for it or not. Howard explains. “As the night progresses, you’re having a great time, until your ex walks in with someone else. You hate the way you look but rather than going home, you press the big red button and get even more drunk. Eventually, you take yourself home full of melancholy, chaos and anger.” Written in the aftermath of a period of intense personal upheaval, described by the band as a collective “mass breakup”, the album finds Lime Garden grappling with grief, drinking, body image and self-esteem, while leaning into a shared, self-aware hedonism. Early uncertainty fuelled a creative urgency that runs through all ten tracks. Produced by Charlie Andrew (Wolf Alice, alt-J), with additional production from drummer Annabel Whittle, Maybe Not Tonight reflects the band’s rapid evolution. Glitchy vocal fragments, hypnotic drum lines, garage-rock guitars, detuned synths and even bongos weave together into immersive, richly detailed songs. Many began life as Whittle’s home-produced demos, drawing influence from Bon Iver, A.G. Cook, Danny L Harle and Jim-E Stack, while pulling from a wide pool of inspirations including Scissor Sisters, Magdalena Bay, The Breeders, St. Vincent, Lily Allen, The Stone Roses and New Order.

My New Band Believe My New Band Believe

  • Rough Trade US
  • Alternative
As the bassist and sometime frontman of black midi, Cameron Picton and his bandmates practiced an explosive form of musical world-building, weaving complex storytelling through thrilling passages of controlled chaos. When the group called it quits in 2023, the artist didn't immediately feel like making a solo record or jumping back into another band. It was from this position of a not-quite team player, not-quite bandleader that Picton entered the studio and the seeds of My New Band Believe gradually began to emerge. The moniker serves as an open invitation, a subtle nod that if a listener is willing to meet the music on it's own terms, they'll be rewarded for taking a flying leap into the dark. The group's self-titled debut is a massive and hallucinatory record. It is a collection of music that swerves through wildly different emotional and thematic registers, all the while unraveling an endlessly compelling thread of dream logic. Picton is an unreliable but charismatic narrator, and together with an all-star cast including 7 members of caroline, Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble, he guides the listener through a rapidly unfolding multi-verse of the band's making. The record is almost entirely acoustic, using the barest amount of reverb and electronic effects possible. It would be a mistake to assume these light touches mean that their music is any less maximal. Picton leads his band so that each track forms, scatters and re-groups, so that the uplift of one song crashes head-long into the rush of another. Inspired by Bert Jansch's hypnotic, hard-driving guitar and Judee Sill's panoramic pop, My New Band Believe is both all-encompassing and constantly in flux.
