Born Ruffians Beauty's Pride

  • Yep Roc Records
  • Alternative, Experimental, Garage rock, Indie
Beauty's Pride is a significant evolution in Born Ruffians' creativity and artistry, both in terms of the writing and as the first album written in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Maddy Wilde who joined the band in 2022. Born Ruffians are a band that has generally favored a sound that is lo-fi and contained. But on Beauty's Pride, they're doing the opposite - it's a richer, bigger, full spectrum sound with lyrical themes that evoke a more universal storytelling spirit. While much of the trend in guitar/indie rock has been to favor more 1960s and 70s-inspired lo-fi recordings, here the band set out to create a record that sounds like it was made in 2025: it's a maximalist indie rock album that embraces hi-fi production techniques. It's filled with fear and optimism (and still plenty of anxiety as is Luke Lalonde's charm), but in an engaging, unpretentious way, something which, again, reflects the year it was made, the cultural feelings of this moment, and the confidence of a band that has earned its stripes.

Cynthia Erivo I Forgive You

  • Republic Records/Verve
  • Pop
Allow Cynthia Erivo to reintroduce herself. The multifaceted Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award-winner and 3x Academy Award-nominated actress, singer, author and producer bares her soul on her sophomore album, I Forgive You. Tenderly blending the sounds of pop, R&B, folk, Britpop, yodeling, wailing and gospel, Cynthia leaps headfirst into a bold new chapter of her artistry. Impassioned and warm, heartbreaking and vulnerable, I Forgive You is a soft testimony, a haunting plea to be witnessed with an open heart. With each track, Cynthia hopes "that people see the human in me. When you're in the public eye, people forget that you are human because they see you as an entity, but not actually flesh and bone, just like everybody else." The music, her story, is a braised reminder that we're all just flesh and bone. The good and the bad - and everything in between - make up the stories of our lives, and Cynthia Erivo is a sight to behold. "This is all just part of the human experience."

Death in Vegas Death Mask

  • Drone
  • Drone, Electronic
On June 6th, Death In Vegas return with new album ‘Death Mask’, where disintegration, overload and total sonic immersion tell a personal tale. With dirty circuitry and rough-hewn textures at the fore, this is gritty, unpolished techno; an audio outlier that’s full of personality, and a bold artistic statement. It’s closer in DNA to the grainy growl of sunn O))), or the searing intensity of Underground Resistance at their fiercest, and as far from generic influencer business as you could possibly get. “I’ve been soaking in Ramleh’s ‘Hole In the Heart’, the machine funk of Terrence Dixon’s Population One, Jamal Moss’ psychedelic techno jams, the stunning minimalism of Mika Vanio’s Ø and Panasonic, the layered drones of LOOP, and drowning in the acid of TM 404” Broader inspirations are weaved into the album’s fabric too; from his Thameside Metal Box studio and evocations of nautical ghosts, to lamentations for a broken world, to memories of a youthful Detroit pilgrimage, and the innocent fraternity of rave euphoria, there’s a lot going on, acting as a chronicle of moments, and locations.

Finn Wolfhard Happy Birthday

  • Night Shift Productions, Inc
  • Rock, Alternative
Happy Birthday is a dizzying rush of nine songs, the album grew out of Wolfhard’s personal challenge to pen 50 songs by the end of 2022. He admits, “I ended up writing a lot of terrible stuff, but a few of those songs I was really proud of went to the Aubreys. I started realizing a general theme in a lot of the other songs involving my identity, anxieties, nostalgia, childhood and loneliness. All of that was a part of a bigger puzzle. I knew I wanted to make a record, but I didn’t know with which songs.” For Wolfhard, the album is another accomplished step forward in his evolution as a musician, songwriter and citizen of planet Earth. “If I were to walk away and listen to it in 10 years, I think it would feel like the beginning of a specific style and voice,” he says. “It can be interesting being a younger person in any kind of industry, because even though I've been acting for a long time, I'm still only 22, and things start to take shape at different times in your life. I hope that when I look back on this record, I’ll be proud of the melodies and the songwriting. I want to be accepting of myself at that time. It was okay that I felt like that and made a record about it and then moved on to new experiences.”

Lifeguard Ripped and Torn

  • Matador
  • Alternative, Indie, Noise rock, Punk
Ripped and Torn on June 6. The youthful trio of Asher Case, Isaac Lowenstein, and Kai Slater have been making music together since they were in high school, nearly a quarter of their lives. Noisy and immediate, cryptic but heartfelt, they draw inspiration from punk, dub, power-pop and experimental sounds, and bring them all together in explosive inspiration. Over their two prior summers on Matador, Lifeguard’s EPs carefully documented the band’s early, earnest, studio explorations. But their tremendous live shows, anchored by Lowenstein’s rock-steady backbeat, hinted that something greater was waiting in the wings. On Ripped and Torn, the barbed-wire sound frames Slater and Case’s newly rich two-part harmonies and collagiste lyrics. Producer Randy Randall (No Age) captures a claustrophobic scrappiness that conjures the feeling and energy of the house parties and live shows, where ears are easily overwhelmed, and ragged improvisations connect with the same force as melodic hooks. The band remains a singular and intimate space where freedom, noise, and melody find visceral form. “The physical element is something we’re all very together on,” explains Slater. “The immediacy of making music. The instant pleasure and satisfaction of it.”

Mary Chapin Carpenter Personal History

  • Lambent Light Records
  • Country
In early 2025 the 11-song album Personal History was recorded at Real World Studios in Box, England, with Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, The National, The Hold Steady) producing and a world-class band of musicians: Matt Rollings (piano, Hammond organ, Phillips organ, accordion, xylophone), Duke Levine (electric guitar, hammer dulcimer, Chris Vatalaro (drums, percussion), Cameron Ralston (bass), and Josh Kaufman himself (guitar, organ, harmonium, harmonica). Anais Mitchell lends harmonies to “Home Is A Song." The album features some of Carpenter’s most personal writing to date and will release on June 6, 2025 with Thirty Tigers worldwide. Carpenter shared of the album process, "I started writing the songs on this album as the pandemic began winding down; the titular song “What Did You Miss” pointed the way forward, with its final verse: “I’ve been writing it down/song by song/as a personal history” when imagining this collection of songs as memoir, and how the wisdom that comes with growing older becomes a north star, whether one is celebrating life’s joys or navigating life’s inevitable losses. From the first verse of “Paint + Turpentine” about sitting in the dark of the Birchmere Music Hall watching Guy Clark teach a master class in songwriting and story telling, to coming to terms with how later life turned out in “Girl and Her Dog”, to inventorying what matters in “The Saving Things” to discovering the wisdom in words and phrases that we usually roll our eyes towards in “Say It Anyway”, it is my hope that these songs allow the listener to come away not only with a musical sketch of my life from young adulthood on, but also an affirming reflection of their own life as well."

McKinley Dixon Magic, Alive!

  • City Slang
  • Hip hop, Rap
In many ways, the breathless and ebullient Magic, Alive! continues the work of its predecessors: It is the story of three kids who lose their best friend and wrestle with the subsequent turmoil. The essential twist, though, is that the trio wonder what they can do to bring their pal back or, at the very least, reconvene with him, so that their friendship does not end with mortality. Indeed, the crux of Magic, Alive! is a broad contemplation of what constitutes magic at all. Why can’t it be the guy who simply gets away with something by ducking from authorities, or the slippery way the world starts to feel after a long pull on a joint or a slow drink from a bottle? Can it merely be the belief in something we cannot plainly see just as well as an abiding trust in miracles, spells, and portals for something beyond our own experience? On Magic, Alive!, Dixon—a son of the ghost-haunted South—says yes to all of it.

Nadah El Shazly Laini Tani

  • One Little Independent Records
  • Alternative
Nadah El Shazly, the Egyptian-born, Montreal-based producer, vocalist, composer, and actor, has announced her highly anticipated second album, ‘Laini Tani’, set for release on June 6th via her new label, One Little Independent Records as well as Backward Music in Canada. Renowned for her blending of experimental sounds with traditional Arabic influences and improvisational styles, she’s garnered international acclaim for her genre-defying artistry, mesmerising vocals, and avant-garde arrangements. ‘Laini Tani’ conveys a heady, exhilarating rush of excess, evoking a sultry haze of balmy nights that stretch effortlessly into dawn while clubs continue unphased. Each track serves as a vignette, capturing fleeting yet vivid moments of introspection, defiance, or unrestrained euphoria. Through intricate wordplay, layered metaphors, and personal symbols, El Shazly crafts an aural and lyrical tapestry vibrant with meaning, where every note and phrase hints at a more intimate narrative. The album is one of contrasts - between indulgence and contemplation, spontaneity and observation - inviting the listener to lose themselves in its enchanting rhythms while deciphering the deeper truths woven into its fabric.

Pulp More

  • Rough Trade
  • Alternative, Alternative rock, Pop
Pulp are happy to announce their new album “More”, their first in almost twenty-four years which will be released via Rough Trade Records on June 6th, 2025. The album was recorded and mixed at Orbb Studio in Walthamstow E17. Limited editions of the album will be available on vinyl. Along with a double LP cut at 45 rpm, which will be exclusive to Pulp's online shop and Rough Trade Records' webstore, there will also be four single-disc colour vinyl pressings that have been both handpicked and named by Jarvis Cocker personally. Alongside the black LP there will also be a “Theresa” green LP available across all retail, a “Blue Sky Thinking” Marble LP, exclusive to independent record stores, a “South Yorkshire Sunset” Marble LP available only from shops in Sheffield and “Isha Kriya”, an ink spot design, available exclusively from Pulp and Rough Trade Records’ online shops. WORDS FROM JARVIS ON “MORE” “This is the first Pulp album since “We Love Life” in 2001. Yes: the first Pulp album for almost 24 years. How did that happen? Well: when we started touring again in 2023, we practiced a new song called “Hymn of the North” during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Hammersmith Odeon. This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024. A couple are revivals of ideas from last century. The music for one song was written by Richard Hawley. The music for another was written by Jason Buckle. The Eno family sing backing vocals on a song. There are string arrangements written by Richard Jones & played by the Elysian Collective. The album was recorded over 3 weeks by James Ford in Walthamstow, London, starting on November 18th, 2024. This is the shortest amount of time a Pulp album has ever taken to record. It was obviously ready to happen. These are the facts. We hope you enjoy the music. It was written & performed by four human beings from the North of England, aided & abetted by five other human beings from various locations in the British Isles. No A.I. was involved during the process. This album is dedicated to Steve Mackey. This is the best that we can do. Thanks for listening.”
