Body Count Merciless

  • Century Media
  • Hip Hop
The pioneering rap metal band Body Count returns with their much-anticipated 8th album. Ice-T and his crew unleash their energy more than ever on the rage-filled 11-track record, Merciless. After persevering through personal tragedies, social opposition, and an army of naysayers, the group emerges bloody but unbroken—and with more rage than ever. “It’s really about that point where you can’t take any more and you’re done,” shares Ice-T about the album. With guest appearances by George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (Cannibal Corpse), Joe Bad (Fit For An Autopsy), and Max Cavalera (Soulfly), “Merciless” offers enough firepower. The current lineup includes surviving OGs Ice-T, Ernie C., and Sean E Sean, joined by bassist Vincent Price, drummer Will “Ill Will” Dorsey, Juan “Juan of the Dead” Garcia, and backing vocalist Little Ice.

Dean & Britta & Sonic Boom A Peace of Us

  • Carpark Records
  • Alternative, Dream pop, Indie, Folk
In a season where we all seek comfort, tradition, and a return to a home of sorts, a trio composed of indie music’s foundational members have gifted us A Peace of Us—an album of diverse holiday tunes filtered through their musical imaginations. Dean & Britta, well-known from their work defining a genre with Galaxie 500 and Luna, join Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, another bastion of indie’s collective adolescence, to bring to life a collection that draws from early ‘60s pop, garage, country, James Bond soundtracks, Christmas carols, and electronica. Dean Wareham recalls a sentiment from his DJ friend Chris: “You can experience all the emotions of Christmas through music: love and hate, joy and heartache, nostalgia, regret, anticipation, and frustration.” Their venture into a holiday album was organic, spurred by a few cover tunes over the years, a Christmas special during the pandemic, and finally collaborative sessions between Dean & Britta in L.A. and Sonic Boom in Portugal. The trio all contributed vocals, with guitars by Wareham, bass and keyboards by Phillips, effects, and mixes by Sonic. The result is an album of exploration as well as comfort, “like Bing Crosby...on acid,” Britta adds, the tracklist a reminder that the holidays are complex and tragicomic. If collaboration is the fuel, peace and mutual understanding is surely the fire, and A Peace of Us has us gathered around it. “Christmas is mostly for children anyway,” says Dean. Sonic adds, “Or the inner child in all of us. Goodwill to all men. Hopes and fears for the year to come. And light in the darkness. Where this festival began.”

Kim Deal Nobody Loves You More

  • 4Ad
  • Alternative
Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s debut album, although it’s technically not her first release under her own name – she self- released a 5-part, 10-song 7” vinyl series in 2013, and beyond that, she’s earned her stripes as early as the late 80s with bands Pixies and The Breeders. The long-awaited record’s creation began with its oldest songs, “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was,” which were written and recorded in 2011, and included in 2013 vinyl series, shortly after Deal concluded Pixies’ ‘Lost Cities Tour’ and relocated to L.A. In the years since, the record took shape in pieces, with a variety of collaborators including Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, and Britt Walford), and new friends like Jack Lawrence (The Greenhorns) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. Tracked over the last several years, the record’s last recording was helmed by iconic engineer and Deal’s close friend Steve Albini, tracking “A Good Time Pushed” with Jim and Kelley in November 2022. Sonically versatile and infectious, the record is a celebration of Deal’s unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape, but also to her immovable cultural weight, including her impact on current young musicians such Olivia Rodrigo (Deal and The Breeders supported her Guts World Tour this year). At one of her sold-out MSG dates with the band, Rodrigo told the crowd: “I thought Kim was the coolest girl in the world. I’m very inspired by them and everything they stand for. They are absolutely iconic.” Nobody Loves You More, Deal’s first individual entry into her musical canon, will only cement her legacy even further and hopefully crystallize the free-wielding, creatively daring spirit she’s been fostering since her very first appearance.

Small Changes is the eagerly anticipated follow-up to Michael’s eponymous third LP, the Mercury Prize winning, and Grammy Award nominated Kiwanuka. Small Changes was produced alongside Danger Mouse and Inflo, the team behind the globally acclaimed Kiwanuka and its equally acclaimed predecessor, Love and Hate. The new record was recorded between London and Los Angeles. The core trio made up of Kiwanuka and his trusty co-producers expanded into a wish-list ensemble that featured legendary bassist Pino Palladino (D’Angelo, John Mayer, Beyoncé) and Jimmy Jam of the iconic Jam and Lewis songwriting and production duo (Janet Jackson, Prince, SOS Band). A welcome return for one of Britain’s most talented of songwriters, most recognisable of vocalists, and most virtuosic of guitarists.

Opeth The Last Will And Testament

  • Reigning Phoenix Music
  • Metal
”The Last Will and Testament” is a concept record of sorts. A restless musical journey in a way mirroring my own relationship with music as a consumer of it," narrates band leader Mikael Åkerfeldt. "I pick up something here, dismiss something there. I worship and I hate music at the same time. This ambivalence leads me down some type of creative path of my own and then, all of a sudden, a collection of songs has been written. Best case scenario, these songs are good enough to impress the band. Good enough for the ”powers that be” in terms of the industry. Good enough for ”you”?! I love this record. I have to say it (write it). Maybe I’m proud even? There are some familiar ingredients in there I suppose. Most of our music has sprung from the same source, so I guess it’s not much of a shocker if it’s going to sound like ”us”. I’m a bit in awe of what we did with ”The Last Will and Testament”. It feels like a dream. There is some "coherence" and ” songwriting skills” I hope, but what do I know? I tend to favour the ”strange” over the ”obvious”, but I feel like I’m in the minority, and that’s fine. So…fair warning! Don’t expect an instant rush (as per usual), but if you do ”get it” (have you got it yet?) right away, that’s ok too!"
