This Is Why We Lost is the second studio album by Smag På Dig Selv and marks a clear step forward for the Copenhagen-based trio. While saxophones and drums remain the core of the band’s sound, the album unfolds with a stronger sense of progression, melody and atmosphere, moving between club energy, trance-like repetition and a more narrative, reflective expression.
The music was created in two distinct periods. One part captures an extroverted and high-energy moment, while the other reflects the transition from summer into autumn after an intense concert season. This duality runs through the album, where immediacy and physical impact coexist with a more focused and mature compositional approach.
The trio open their format to new voices and traditions: vibraphone textures, a reimagined Palestinian folk song, and the appearance of the band members’ mothers as the punk band Pas På Dig Selv. Together with subtle inspirations from minimalist music, these elements expand the band’s sonic world without compromising their raw, recognisable identity.
Where the debut album felt like pure youthful surplus, This Is Why We Lost moves towards something more deliberate and emotionally grounded. It is music that can function in a club, in a concert hall, or in headphones late at night.
