Finally available on vinyl (180g) 23 years after release.Cool grooves, atmospheric samples, the clear voice of a solitary trumpet, now keenly articulated now longingly whispering ... Anybody who gives this production some attention will understand why producer and bass guitarist Dal Martino and his partner, the prominent trumpet player Reiner Winterschladen, have chosen the programmatic name of Nighthawks for their first joint project as a duo - inspired by Edward Hopper's famous 1941 painting of the same name. (You know, the picture with three people at the bar behind a large illuminated window at the corner of an otherwise completely dark street.) Nighthawks are people who live entirely for and blossom in the night. Unlike the equally proverbial night-owl, the typical nighthawk does not just sit around with big round eyes; he - or she - is driven by hunger. Nighthawks hunt for prey, experiences or encounters after sunset which make them have better nights than other people's days. So did Martino and Winterschladen: Most recordings of Citizen Wayne were actually produced at night - due to their numerous other engagements. Dal Martino has not only been a much sought-after bass guitarist for both stage and studio); meanwhile he has also become a sought-after producer of film and advertising music. Due to the permanent work in his studio he has as little time as has Reiner Winterschladen who has been an active professional musician for more than 30 years. The idea of making recordings as a duo was put into their heads during a joint commissioned production for a film project which was regarded as extremely satisfactory by all those involved [track 10 of the album is a sample of this inspiration]. The decision to sound out the potential of the work of the two of them was taken soon after; from then on, Martino and Winterschladen used every breather to make progress with the new affaire à deux. As already mentioned, mostly long after dark.
