Beth Orton The Ground Above

  • Partisan Records
  • Alternative
If 2022's album, Weather Alive, lived underwater, suspended, spectral, and dreamlike, The Ground Above marks a resurfacing. It is Beth's most direct and unapologetic music to date; profoundly urgent, embodied, and powered by a new found strength. Where the previous record unfolded in a post-ictal, time-out-of-time dreamscape, The Ground Above finds Orton firmly back on land, taking a giant intake of air. It documents survival, integration, renewal, and acceptance without resignation.

Melanie Radford For the Sake of Stillness (Ethereal Swirl)

  • Jealous Butcher
For the Sake of Stillness, her debut solo album, is an offering of music that asks you to pay attention. Most of the songs are at a walking pace, mimicking the long walks through foreign cities and the observant headspace they come from. Stillness was recorded during and in-between touring, coming together over years as a centering practice and statement of self. An ambient score of natural sounds from these wanderings flows under many of the songs, records of place: the rhythm of footsteps on crisp ground, birdsong, rain falling outside, an impatient car shouldering into distant traffic, the pulse of the ocean, the warm texture of unintelligible and overlapping conversations. These pocket recordings interweaving with the music give an added impression of closeness. We hear the place in the music, and the music is a window into what was felt there. Like an invitation into a daydream, a view into someone's private world. The music is quiet, dreamy, steady and self-assured. There's a rhythmic heartbeat and little flares of exuberance: touches of magic and awe everywhere. It channels the disparate moments and impressions collected in her tours through the U.S., Europe, Australia, Brazil, and unifies them through the strength of Melanie's artistic personality and perspective.

Muse The Wow! Signal

  • Wea
Muse are a culturally-attuned, genre-defying band who channel the anxieties of each era—technology, power, rebellion, and identity—into maximalist, stadium-ready rock that evolves with the times while staying unmistakably Muse. Kicking off with new single “Be With You,” this next era of Muse is rooted in electronic experimentation and an insatiable curiosity. ‘The WOW! Signal’ represents a world of cosmic mystery, existential hope, and the exhilarating possibility of contact with something far greater than ourselves.

Pond Terrestrials

  • Mangovision
Beloved Australian five-piece POND offer a skerrick of hope in a hostile world with their new record - their 11th - Terrestrials. A cyclone of urgent, scorched earth rock'n'roll, Terrestrials tips the hat to the sounds of then while squarely facing up to the here and now.Conceived from a place of reverence for a particularly potent epoch in Oz rock, Terrestrials mines the sound of open sky melancholia, heat haze sizzling on the plains and jangly pub backrooms that hits an eternally poignant nerve for anyone familiar with the sound, time and place.Like much of The Pond catalogue, Terrestrials is a record of people and place, of exploring the identity of each, as well as where and how they intersect and interact. Terrestrials twitches with the desperation of people and planet on the brink, but ultimately bets on the beauty of both to prevail."This one is hitting me this morning. It's got all this strutting, preening glam-rock/new wave energy, but it's too weird and oblique to play as pure pastiche." - Stereogum on "Terrestrials"

  • Bar / None Records
  • Folk, Indie, Indie folk, Indie rock
On You Are Spring!, Tasha creates a warm and hopeful meditation on renewal, resilience, and embracing the present moment. The Butthole Surfers After The Astronaut

  • Sunset Blvd Records
  • Rock
Riding the least likely commercial success of the 90s with Modern Rock chart topper "Pepper," Austin odd rockers Butthole Surfers returned to the studio in 1998 for the followup, After The Astronaut. Leaning further into experiments with electronics, hip-hop, acid grooves, and the otherwise unusual, the result is a dizzying orbital trip expanding the idea of what's possible in rock music.Disputes between The Butthole Surfers and Capitol Records left the album unreleased, while the band regrouped and re-recorded some of the material for 2001's Weird Revolution, released through Hollywood Records. After The Astronaut collected dust, eventually developing a mythic status.A quarter century later, Butthole Surfers are realizing their vision for After The Astronaut. Newly mixed by guitarist/producer Paul Leary, After The Astronaut corrects the record on the band's activity in the late 90s with a bold, idiosyncratic evolution of their sun-fried psychedelia.
