This release is part of a series of 7" releases from legendary Austin punk band Cornpone. Each 7" will have one side by them and the other side by another legendary Austin group. The Cornpone songs were originally recorded at Sweatbox studio in 1996. It's really a blur now. When we recorded these 12 songs Cornpone was possibly at our best and our worst. We'd been playing a lot and the songs were coming together. Our performances had peaked visually and our playing was chaotic, tight and electric, but physically, we were all strung out and starting to become at odds with each other because of it. In retrospect, these songs perfectly reflect that inner conflict, and our projection of that rage and irony of it all, only so that we could tear it apart and laugh at the absurdity of ever wanting anything at all.
With the initial recording complete, SXSW was coming, and Cornpone has several unofficial gigs. The last one was at Blue Flamingo was with Pretty Mouth (the Dicks, sans Gary). Spanky (guitar) showed up with no gear, and had to borrow an amp from Pretty Mouth. They raged and went their separate ways. Two days later Spanky was found dead in his room of an overdose.
With no adult tools to cope, and with tensions at a fever pitch the band split, the recording was forgotten. Anthony and Jennie had a child then Anthony went to prison, Craig joined the Bulimics and World Burns to Death, Coby went to the Crack Pipes and Attic Ted, Jerry went to Flame-trick Subs and Transgressors. The recording that had been dubbed, Cornpone's Last Stand, stayed lost. Sweatbox burned down, but somehow the tape was preserved and upon Anthony's release from prison, the masters made their way to him via Ryan Anderson who had saved the tape from a dumpster and meticulously digitized each track.
This record is what is left from this story. It's the only record of the music of the band. It is all that is left with the exception of a bunch of broken dreams, and debauchery lace memories.
