Recorded during a few cold winter weeks with a newborn baby strapped to his chest, Christo Graham’s new album Good Covers is his latest solo work, changing course from the rock opera he released in May of this year. Following up 2024’s Music For Horses and akin to 2020’s Turnin’, Good Covers shows Graham getting back to a simpler acoustic form, tenderly and cheekily exploring the ways we hide from each other and what we choose to show; ways we communicate, agree, disagree, and relate; to what we treasure, and what we bury.

Accompanied in his home studio by his four-year-old on the record button and his one-month-old asleep in a sling, Good Covers’ 10 songs were written and recorded within a month after Christmas 2024. Kelly sings harmony and rounds out the family affair with Graham covering the instrumentation himself, a week before he began rehearsing his third season as a Shakespearean actor at the Stratford Festival.

The arrangement of the 10 tracks features stripped down acoustic ballads A Face to the Name, and Invisible Dice (the latter inspired by a story of Townes Van Zandt’s visit to Toronto in 1995), folk waltzes Hidin’ Your Hurtin’ and That’s Not What It Feels Like To Me, and a leisurely stroll down the piano-lined memory lane of Heather, all serving to further explore what Graham set out for with Music For Horses: something like British Invasion Americana.
