Pj Orr Tightrope Walker
PJ Orr has made something very special with his latest album and second since departing Sydney psych-rockers Hailer. PJ is the (sub)urbanite poet who has emerged from the fog to present Tightrope Walker, a guitar record that will leave you levitating as strangely familiar sounds swan and seesaw all over your subconscious. PJ Orr's solo debut record Foggy Notion was described by Happy Magazine (Mar 2016) as a genre bending 'a woozy cocktail of shoegaze, folk and blues' and the 'the musical equivalent of a dress that changed colour'. Foggy Notion was self-produced with PJ playing all instruments, across many studios. Tightrope Walker has seen the solo project evolve from finger picked acoustic and loops into an electrified band cohesively tuned under Tim Kevin's watchful ears n' eyes. Recorded in Marrickville, Sydney and co-produced with former Youth Group member Tim Kevin (whose production credits include Holly Throsby, Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil, The Lovetones) the band assembled for Tightrope Walker have joyfully woven jangly blues licks, driving beats and lush psychedelic textures within melodic pop songs. It's a haunted record, perhaps. But like a punch-drunk boxer, it sways yet ultimately manages to stay triumphant on its own two feet.
