DJ and producer Marcel Dettmann is recognised as one of the most influential proponents of contemporary Techno. Widely associated with iconic places – Berlin, Berghain and Hard Wax – Dettmann stays true to his roots by consistently innovating his interpretation of electronic music, integrating art with the scene. Raised in the former GDR in a small town near Berlin, Dettmann had already begun to develop his passion for electronic music in his youth days. Bands like Depeche Mode, The Cure and Front 242, as well as Post-Punk and Industrial, count as his earliest influences, long before he discovered his affinity for Techno. For Dettmann, innovation has always been a foundational pillar of techno—and, by extension, his creativity. That's why he fell in love with the futuristic sound and culture back in the '90s, and why, as one of its most revered and consistent DJs and producers, he's never stayed still.
Relentlessly pushing forward, testing the limits of his comfort zone, has been as integral as cueing the next track. Dettmann has always worked across many mediums and been an integral part of the Berlin club, Berghain. His work as a DJ encompasses a singular sound for a multiplicity of dancefloors across the world, yet also for the living room and beyond with his curated editions of iconic compilations (Fabric, Berghain, DJ-Kicks amongst many more). Across the breath of his own album releases (Ostgut Ton and Dekmantel), slew of remixes (Moderat, Fever Ray and Yello and many more) and interdisciplinary artists projects (MASSE with the Berlin State Ballet, exhibition New Works with Frederike von Rauch and being included in the soundtrack for Matrix Resurrections) he has pushed his own sound to its limit. On his Labels MDR and Bad Manners, Dettmann’s role was a curator, championing the next generation of artists.
‘My Own Shadow’, is the latest chapter in the Berlin-based legend's illustrious career. “The name reflects the idea of working with something that is always with me but often unseen. Over the years I’ve collected hundreds of fragments — music, sketches, photos — and My Own Shadow became the umbrella to bring them together. It felt like the right moment because I’ve reached a point where I don’t just want to release tracks or play club sets; I want to create a space where all of my artistic expressions meet.” Blending techno with film, sketches and photography. The shows are less club sets and more immersive experiences, where the audience gets lost in a "full sensory narrative."
My Own Shadow's first official release, Approaching, is a five-track EP landing on !K7 Records in November. Complemented by his own photography on the artwork, the music spans techno and ambient, fizzing with a madcap funk and energy quite unlike any of his previous productions.
Take the scratchy ambient of the title cut, with a composition which hangs eerily with the drama of uncanny atmospheres. "DMT" and "Without A Cause," provide two slices of time tripping techno, featuring a subconscious awareness from beyond the material realm . On "Timefold," a tide of noise rises and falls like over crunchy kick drums. ‘My Own Shadow’ stretches that further—it's not just sound; it's also image and space. Think of it as a living archive I can reshape in real time. Every show, every photograph, every fragment is part of the same shadow—always shifting, never the same twice."
