Sîn is the name given in Mesopotamia to a deity representing the moon. In English, sin refers to transgression, a violation of the law. Ko Shin Moon’s forthcoming album takes root within the ambiguity of these interpretations and the elusive meanings they suggest. It traces a continuum from dawn to dusk, from open fields to cities, from union to separation, balancing the desire for transgression with the quest for plenitude.
From the pop surrealism of ‘Le Soleil’ and disco-inspired ‘Hayati’ which plays out like a Bollywood production, to the Anatolian rhythms of ‘Perperişan’ featuring Turkish pop star Mabel Matiz about the forbidden desire between two men, Sîn is a kaleidoscopic journey that fuses a hybrid of territories, imaginary soundscapes and multi-coloured collages, inviting listeners to transcend time and geography. Elsewhere, the spiralling rhythms of ‘Wa’wy Ya Thiba’ (“Howl, she-Wolf!”) featuring Syrian singer Sarah Husein, is a reinterpretation of a traditional song from Northeastern Syria, about forbidden love, while ‘Arkad’ and ‘Bleu’ continue the party in grandiose and frenetic style.
