As a producer and composer, David August's polymorphous sound comes from a place of deep introspection and self-discovery. The classically trained Tonmeister graduate is difficult to pigeonhole. Such is his depth of knowledge, that attempting to connect the dots between his early dance singles through to his debut album Times in 2013, and his 2016 collaboration with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester can seem like an exercise in futility. His new album, D'Angelo, draws inspiration from the life and works of baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Fusing laid back pop sensibility with moody cinematographic soundscapes, it is the sound of a young artist getting in touch with his roots, exploring new landscapes and freeing inhibition. It was important to David that the recording sessions happen on Italian soil, so that he could draw inspiration from the very place it came from. He paints a vivid portrait of his past by applying his technical training to something utterly raw and primal and by deconstructing pop atmospheres and reforming them into a deeply moving work.
